From Backpacking to a Job from Heaven
Introduction of the Instructor
Sister Chang Wan-Lin loves traveling, strollinging, and exploring the world, and she enjoys sharing what she sees and learns along the way.
At age 23, after graduating from university, she found herself feeling lost in life. After her baptism, she became deeply grateful that the gospel gave her direction and meaning.
She worked in the tourism industry for twenty years, gaining rich and colorful experiences — chasing polar bears, feeding lemurs, crossing deserts, and visiting Cuba to learn about Che Guevara’s story. After the pandemic, she transitioned to floral design and teaching children’s picture books. What began as a small side job to earn pocket money unexpectedly turned into what she calls a “job from Heaven” — with excellent pay and the blessing of being able to accompany her child to and from school every day.
In 2015, while leading a tour group in India, she fell seriously ill after drinking contaminated water and suffering severe stress. An undiagnosed chocolate cyst suddenly enlarged and ruptured, likely causing abdominal infection and intense pain — her first experience of hospitalization, IV drips, and CT scans, all while in India.
She expressed deep gratitude to her family and many Church members who fasted and prayed for her recovery. The stake president contacted local leaders and arranged for missionaries to bless her. While she was near the Taj Mahal and unable to reach missionaries immediately, two elders and a sister finally visited her in New Delhi’s most advanced hospital to give her a priesthood blessing. That same afternoon, after an examination, the doctor said, “Everything looks normal except for some fluid in your abdomen (which she later learned was blood). You can be discharged.”
After returning to Taiwan, she learned the rupture of a chocolate cyst could have been life-threatening. Following surgery, her menstrual pain completely disappeared, and she later conceived successfully. (She noted that she knew sisters who carried pregnancies with cysts that crowded the baby’s growth space — if the cyst ruptures, surgery is required to prevent abdominal infection.)
She deeply thanks God for the miracle that came through fasting and prayer — an expression of His love and mercy that preserved her life.
In the Church, Sister Chang has served as a Ward missionary, Young Women teacher, Young Women president, Single Adult representative, Primary teacher, Relief Society counselor, Sunday School teacher, Relief Society teacher, and a member and chair of the North Area Single Adult Committee. She currently serves as a Relief Society teacher.
Course Overview
Everyone searches for their unique gifts and their own place in life, yet that path is often unclear. From a mother balancing work and family to becoming a remote-working travel product manager — this is a journey of faith, growth, and divine grace.
Her story isn’t about luck, nor about being born especially gifted. Rather, it’s about trying, persisting, and step by step discovering confidence and passion at each stage of life — building expertise, achieving goals, and receiving blessings “beyond all that we ask or think.”
This course isn’t just about travel — it’s also about career choices, faith turning points, and balancing family life. She will share how an ordinary mother, sister, and planner learned to affirm herself, enjoy who she is, and walk her own path.
